If your phone does not have sufficient free space, you might not be able to download more apps and media, and your Phone’s performance may be reduced.
Here are some ways to free up space so you can keep your phone running fastly and smoothly.
First, take a look at some important points:
  • Storage is where you keep data, like music and photos.
  • Memory or RAM is where you run programs, like apps and the Android system.
These suggestions are listed in order, so start with the first one, see if that helps, and then continue to the next one if it doesn't.

Before we proceed, install "Files by Google" from Play Store.

Please note: I will use Samsung Galaxy M12 running on One UI 4 (based on Android 11). So some settings may be different in the different models.

How To Empty Recycle Bin on Samsung (Android) Phones

Samsung includes a Trash folder in many apps like Gallery, Notes, Contacts, Files, and others. You must clear the trash in all the apps if you want to free up storage on your Samsung Galaxy phone.
To empty Trash on Samsung (Android) phones:
  • Open "My Files"
  • At the bottom, tap on Analyse storage.
  • If you have any Trash on your phone, will be shown under the "Recycle bin" section.
  • Tap on it and Empty the Recycle bin of all apps.

How To Delete Duplicate Files on Samsung (Android) phones

To free up space, you can find and delete duplicate files on your device.
Important: The original file is marked with an “Original” badge. We recommend that you keep the original file.
To remove duplicate files:
  1. Open the "Files by Google" app.
  2. On the bottom left, tap on the Clean tab.
  3. On the “Duplicate files” card, tap "Select files".
  4. Now select duplicate files that you want to delete.
    To select all duplicates at once, tap on "All duplicates".
  5. At the bottom, tap on the Delete button.
  6. On the confirmation dialogue, tap Delete.

How To Uninstall Unused Apps & Games on Samsung (Android) phones

You can uninstall apps or games that you no longer use. If you uninstall an app and need it later, you can download it again. If you paid for the app, you won't have to buy it again.
To remove unnecessary apps & games:
  • Open the "Files by Google" app.

  • Here, tap on "Unused apps" to see list of unused app,
  • Select (tap and hold) apps or games that you want to uninstall.

How To Disable Unnecessary System Apps on Samsung (Android) Phones

When you turn on your new device for the first time, some apps will already be installed. Some of these apps are essential for your device to run correctly and cannot be uninstalled or disabled.
Certain apps cannot be uninstalled but can be disabled. This is because they are useful for the everyday use and the basic functions of your smartphone.
Disabling an app will remove it from the apps screen and stop it from running in the background. Disabled apps will no longer receive updates.
To disable system Apps on Samsung phones:
  • Tap and hold the icon of the app you wish to disable.
  • And then tap on Disable.
  • On pop-up, tap on Disable to confirm.

How To Clear Cache of Apps & Games on Samsung (Android) Phones

You can clear the app cache to free up space. Please note: deleting the app cache will delete temporary data. Some apps can open slower the next time you use them.
You can clear the cache of a specific app from Settings. Or, you can use the "Files by Google" app to Delete junk files of all apps at once.

How to clear cache for a specific App on Android phones

To clear the app cache of the app:
  1. Tap and hold on App for which you want to clear cache, and select "App info (!)".
  2. In "App info", tap on Storage.
  3. In storage, tap on the "Clear cache".

To clear the cache of all apps at once:
  1. Open the "File by Google" app.
  2. In the Files app, tap on the Clean tab.
  3. Under Cleaning suggestions, in the "Junk Files" card, tap on Clean.
  4. On the "Clear temporary app files" pop-up, tap on clear.

You can also clear app data to free up space. Please note: deleting app data will reset the app, and remove sign-in accounts and any data stored by the app.
To delete app data:
  1. Tap and hold on App for which you want to clear cache, and select "App info (!)".
  2. In "App info", tap on Storage.
  3. In storage, tap on the "Clear data".
  4. On prompt, tap on OK.

How To Remove Backed-Up Photos & Videos

If you back up with Google Photos, you can delete the copies on your phone. You can see the backed-up copies in the app using Wi-Fi or mobile data.
To free up space using Google Photos:
  1. Open the "Google Photos" app.
  2. Tap on the profile photo (at the top right) and then tap on "Free up space".
    Here, you can see how much space you can free.
  3. Tap the "Free up..." button to free up space.

How to enable Auto Delete Unnecessary Data on Samsung (Android) phone

Samsung phones have a very important and useful setting, that can clean or delete unnecessary files, cache files, log files, and unnecessary folders automatically. But, this setting is off by default.
To turn on automatically deleting unnecessary data on Samsung phone:
  1. Open Settings.
  2. In Settings, tap on "Battery and Device care".
  3. In "Device care", tap on More options ⁝ (at top-right) and select "Storage booster".
  4. In "Storage booster", tap on "Auto delete unnecessary data".
  5. In "Auto delete unnecessary data", turn ON the toggle.
  6. Under Schedule, select Daily at midnight or the option you like.
  7. If you want to receive a notification for this, just turn on the toggle next to the Notification.

  3. Under Catagories, tap on Downloads.
  4. Select, tap and hold, the files that you want to delete.
  5. Then tap on the Delete icon (at the top right).
  6. On prompt, tap on the Delete to delete the files.
  7. As we deleted unnecessary Downloads, delete unnecessary ImagesVideosAudios, and "Documents & Other".

How To Move Files To SD Card on Android phones

If you have SD Card or External storage device, then you move large files to SD Card.
To move files to SD Card:
  1. Open the "Files by Google" app.
  2. On the Files app, tap on the Browse tab.
  3. Under Catagories, tap on Downloads.
  4. Select, tap and hold, the files that you want to move.
  5. Tap on "More options" (3 dots at top right) and select "Move to SD Card".
    Moving files using this method on the Files app, will automatically create folders and organize files in them.
  6. As we moved Downloads from Phone Storage to SD card, move ImagesVideosAudios, and "Documents & Other".
