Meta (formally Facebook) announced More Control and Privacy with Default Disappearing Messages and Multiple Durations this month (6 December 2021).
You can now have the option to turn on disappearing messages by default for all new chats. When enabled, all new one-on-one chats you or another person start will be set to disappear at your chosen duration, and Meta also added a new option when creating a group chat that lets you turn it on for groups you create. This new feature is optional and does not change or delete any of your existing chats.
In this blog post/video, I am going to show you, How to turn on disappearing messages by default for all new chats in WhatsApp on Android phones. Or, how to set a Default message timer in WhatsApp on Android phones.
To turn on the Default message timer for new chats in WhatsApp on Android:
- Open the WhatsApp app.
- Tap on the More options icon (3 vertical dots at top-right) and select Settings.
- In Settings, tap on Account.
- In Account, tap on Privacy.
- In Privacy, under Disappearing messages, tap on Default message timer.
- And here, you can select a duration for the Default message timer for new chats.
If you choose to switch on default disappearing messages, WhatsApp will display a message in your chats that tells people this is the default you’ve chosen. This makes clear it's nothing personal - it's a choice you've made about how you want to communicate with everyone on WhatsApp moving forward. Though of course, if you need a particular conversation to remain permanent, it’s easy to switch a chat back.
Please note: only use disappearing messages with trusted individuals. For example, it's possible for someone to:
- Forward or take a screenshot of a disappearing message and save it before it disappears.
- Copy and save content from the disappearing message before it disappears.
- Take a photo of a disappearing message with a camera or other device before it disappears.
And that’s how you can turn on disappearing messages by default for all new chats in WhatsApp on Android.
