To turn off Media auto-download on WhatsApp app:
  1. Tap on More options (3 vertical dots at top right) and select Settings.
  2. In Settings, tap on Storage and data.
  3. In Storage and data, under Media auto-download, tap on When using mobile data.
  4. Uncheck all items and then tap on OK.
    To turn off Media auto-download on a roaming network, tap on "When roaming" and uncheck all items and then tap on OK.
    If you want to turn off Media auto-download on Wi-Fi, tap on "When connected on Wi-Fi" and uncheck all items and then tap on OK.

How to reduce Media upload quality in WhatsApp app on Android phone

To reduce Media upload quality on the WhatsApp app:
  1. Tap on More options (3 vertical dots at top right) and select Settings.
  2. In Settings, tap on Storage and data.
  3. In Storage and data, under Media upload quality, tap on Photo upload quality.
  4. Select Data saver and tap on OK.

How to use less data for calls in WhatsApp app on Android phone

To use less data for calls on the WhatsApp app:
  1. Tap on More options (3 vertical dots at top right) and select Settings.
  2. In Settings, tap on Storage and data.
  3. In Storage and data, turn on the toggle next to Use less data for calls.
Currently, I am using the WhatsApp app version 2.21.24.22. So these settings may be different in different versions.
