Meta launches Community Notes on Facebook, Instagram and Threads

Meta is introducing Community Notes to Facebook, Instagram, and Threads in the United States, moving away from its third-party fact-checking program. Here are the key points:
Purpose and Testing:
Community Notes will allow users to write and rate notes to add context to posts.
Testing begins on March 18, 2025, with notes initially not visible publicly to refine the system.
How It Works:
Similar to X's Community Notes, notes will only be published if contributors with varying viewpoints agree on them.
Notes will have a 500-character limit, require supporting links, and will be anonymous.
Contributor Eligibility:
Contributors must be over 18, have an account older than six months, and use two-factor authentication or a verified phone number.
Notes will initially be available in six languages and exclude advertisements.
Framework and Bias Reduction:
Meta will use X's open-source algorithm for the rating system and aim to reduce bias through community-driven contributions.
Unlike fact-checking, Community Notes won’t penalize content distribution.
Future Plans:
Once successfully tested, Meta plans to roll out Community Notes nationwide and eventually globally.
This shift aims to enhance transparency and lessen bias by involving a diverse range of contributors in providing context to posts.
