Android 16 Beta 3 has reached Platform Stability, meaning the API surface and app-facing behaviours are final. Developers can now target Android 16 in their apps and release them on Google Play.
New Features and Enhancements:
- Auracast Broadcast Audio: Pixel 9 devices now support Auracast broadcast audio, enhancing accessibility for users with compatible LE Audio hearing aids and earbuds.
- Outline Text: A new accessibility feature that improves text legibility for users with low vision by introducing outline text instead of high contrast text.
- Local Network Protection: Developers can test this feature that will require apps to request specific permissions to access local networks in future Android versions.
Testing and Compatibility:
Developers are encouraged to test their apps for compatibility with Android 16, particularly focusing on behavior changes such as JobScheduler quotas, broadcast ordering, and new security measures for Intents.
SDKs, libraries, and tools should also be updated to support Android 16 to avoid compatibility issues for downstream developers.
Future Updates:
Android plans two API releases in 2025: a major release in Q2 (Android 16) and a minor one in Q4 with no app-breaking changes.
Developers are advised to start preparing their apps and tools for the upcoming requirements and updates.
