How to back up and restore the registry in Windows PC

Before working in the Windows Registry, it is always a good idea to back it up first, so that you have the option of restoration, should something go wrong.
In this blog post, I will show you, how to back up and restore the registry in Windows 11.

How to back up registry on Windows PC?

To back up registry in Windows 11:
  • Select Search on the Taskbar, type Regedit, and select "Registry Editor".
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  • In "Registry Editor", locate and click the registry key or subkey that you want to back up.
    To back up the complete Registry, highlight Computer.
  • Then click on File and select Export.
  • In the "Export Registry File" dialogue box, select the location to which you want to save the backup copy, and then type a name for the backup file in the "File name" field.
  • And then click on Save to back up the registry.

How to restore registry on Windows PC?

To restore registry in Windows 11:
  • Select Search on the Taskbar, type Regedit, and select "Registry Editor".
    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  • Then click on File and select Import.
  • In the "Import Registry File" dialogue box, select the location to which you saved the backup copy, and select the backup file.
  • And then click on Open to restore the registry.
