How to install VMware Tools in Windows 7 | How to fix: VMware Tool installation error in Windows 7 | Windows 7 VMware Tools fix

In this post or video, I am going to show you, how to fix the VMware Tools installation error in Windows 7.

Error / Symptoms

While installing VMware Tools in Windows 7 (Guest OS), you may get these errors:
  • Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software.
  • Setup failed to install the VSock Virtual Machine Communication Interface Sockets driver automatically. This driver will have to be installed manually.
  • Setup failed to install the Memory Control driver automatically. This driver will have to be installed manually.
This is because some specific Windows update packages need to be installed manually prior to VMware Tools installation.

Workaround

So, after installing Windows 7 (Guest OS),
  1. Download required Windows Update packages:
On Host (main) OS, use your favourite browser and download the required Windows Update packages available at
    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/search.aspx?q=kb4474419 (34.3 MB for 32-bit / 53.3 MB for 64-bit) and
    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/search.aspx?q=4490628 (4.0 MB for 32-bit / 9.1 MB for 64-bit).
  2. Create an ISO file for packages:
You can use the free tool ImgBurn to create an ISO file. Download and install ImgBurn on your Host OS.
    On Host OS, open ImgBurn,
Select Create image file from files/folders option.
At the right side of the Source section, click on Browse for a file... icon > navigate to the location where you downloaded Update package > select Update Package and click on open button.
At the right side of the Destination section, click on Browse for a file... icon > navigate to the location where you want to save ISO file > In File name box type Windows 7 VMware Fix and click on Save button.
And then click on the Build button to create an ISO file.
  3. Mount Windows Update ISO file:
On VMware Workstation, select VM Removable Drives > CD/DVD (IDE) > Settings...
Under Connection, choose the Use ISO image file option.
Click on the Browse... button > navigate to the location where you created Update Packages ISO file > select Windows 7 VMware Fix ISO file and click on Open button.
Under Device status, check Connected and then click on the OK button to mount the Windows Update ISO file.
  4. Install required Windows Update:
In Windows 7 (Guest OS), open DVD/CD Drive and,
    First, install Windows6.1-kb4490628...
    ● Open the Windows6.1-kb4490628..., click on Yes and then on Close (after installation).
    And then install Windows6.1-kb4474419...
    ● Open the Windows6.1-kb4474419..., click on Yes and then on Restart Now.
The Windows 7 (Guest OS) will restart to complete the installation.
  5. And then install VMware Tools in Windows 7 (Guest OS):
After Windows 7 (Guest OS) bootup, on VMware Workstation, select VM > Install VMware Tools...
And then install VMware Tools as you normally install.
And that’s how you can install VMware Tools in Windows 7.
